Julie,

I'm definitely going to listen to that podcast...I loved the quote from Tracy K. Smith. A Substack you might like to check out: https://jamescrews.substack.com/

He is a poet, and I have found his words and reflections to be very comforting, especially right now.

Poetry saves my bacon on a regular basis! As Audre Lorde famously said, "poetry is not a luxury." Lately I've been on an Irish poet kick - Seamus Heaney, Paul Muldoon, John O'Donohue. This morning though, after reading some Irish poetry, it just so happens that I posted part of a Joy Harjo poem ("A Map to the Next World") in a note here on SS. Thanks for sharing all of this, Julie. I'm glad poetry made your workout a little kinder.

Thank you, too. I appreciate that you share your own love of poetry and poets and especially the reminder that poetry is not a luxury.

A piece by e e cummings always reminds me of the importance of poetry.

"When you think

Or you believe

Or you know

You are a lot of other people

But the minute you feel

You are no one but yourself."

I’ve never run into that e e poem before. It’s really wonderful!

I loved the bit by Joy Harjo. Poetry can do that. I'm not familiar with any of the writers you mention, however, and Harjo only by name.

Many years ago, I read a poem by Loren Eiseley (sp?) about a stuffed lion sitting on his shelf that someone gave him as a child. He used to clutch it while his parents fought. I could see a scared little boy hugging the little thing. He was later buried with it.
